Breakthrough Resource for PMDD Patients: A Collaborative Effort between Clinical Experts and Patients

BOSTON, MA -- In a groundbreaking effort to address the complexities of Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD), a newly authored eBook titled "PMDD Treatment Options: A Patient's Guide to Evidence-Based Treatments for Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder" will launch April 17. This resource is a collective endeavor bringing together the expertise of clinical professionals and the invaluable lived experiences of patients with PMDD.

Affecting 1 in 20, PMDD involves experiencing psychological and/or physical distress during normal hormone fluctuations in the menstrual cycle. This eBook, developed over years of meticulous collaboration, is a vital addition to the medical literature, providing patients, caregivers, and healthcare providers with accessible information, evidence-based insights, and treatment options for managing PMDD. Authored by the International Association for Premenstrual Disorders (IAPMD), including inputs from professionals and patients, this comprehensive guide reflects the latest clinical guidelines and provides easy-to-understand information supported by a systematic review of evidence and an assessment of the benefits and harms of various care options.

"At IAPMD, we recognize the urgent need for comprehensive resources that empower patients to make informed decisions about their healthcare," says Sandi MacDonald, Co-founder and executive director at IAPMD. "This eBook represents a significant milestone in our ongoing efforts to foster collaborative, evidence-based approaches to PMDD management."

The interactive eBook encompasses a range of topics, including understanding PMDD, PMDD self-care skills, clinical treatment guidelines, patient experiences, and insights from experts in the field. Notably, it emphasizes the importance of integrated decision-making, which considers scientific evidence, clinical expertise, and patient preferences. By incorporating these essential components, the eBook aims to optimize treatment outcomes and enhance patient care.

"There is no single experience of PMDD,” added MacDonald. “We understand the challenges faced by PMDD patients navigating their healthcare journey and hope the eBook provides a roadmap that empowers them to make informed decisions, advocate for themselves, and access the support they deserve."

Key features of the eBook include:

  • Interactive sections tailored to individual preferences

  • Insights into evidence-based treatment approaches

  • Guidance on what to expect when initiating new treatments

  • Links to the source of scientific papers and articles, and additional resources (e.g., symptom tracking, webinar videos) that helped inform the eBook

As a patient-led organization, IAPMD is celebrating its 10th year of building awareness for premenstrual disorders, reducing stigma, establishing a supportive community, and advancing research on PMDD. The eBook represents a culmination of efforts to bridge the gap between patient experiences and clinical expertise, offering a comprehensive resource for individuals affected by PMDD.

"We believe that knowledge is power," concludes Jennifer Gordon, PhD, Director, Reproductive Mental Health Research Unit, University of Regina, Department of Psychology, and Chair of IAPMD’s Clinical Advisory Board. "By equipping patients with evidence-based information and support, we strive to empower them to take control of their PMDD journey and advocate for their well-being."
