VIDEO SUPPORT GROUPS - for partners of those who have PMDD and/or PME

Online groups can be great, but sometimes nothing beats talking face to face to others who understand. That’s why we have launched video support groups so you can easily connect with others in a safe, moderated environment.

The sessions are led by trained IAPMD peer support facilitators who have lived experience of PMDD/PME and want to help make the path easier for others.

Video peer support groups are provided free of charge from IAPMD - but you must book a space for each session you wish to attend.

Sessions are run throughout the month. Aaron and Leo facilitate these groups and partners in any capacity or relationship structure are welcome to attend.

Hormonal Sensitivity Across Reproductive Life Stages: Why Bother?

Hormonal Sensitivity Across Reproductive Life Stages: Why Bother?

This is an IAPMD Professional Community Webinar, and the content is aimed at Health Care Professionals & Researchers. This webinar will specifically benefit all health professionals, people with lived experience, educators, trainees, etc.

Please join IAPMD and Dr. Benicio Frey as he discusses hormonal sensitivity across reproductive life stages.

Multiple lines of evidence show that a subset of people are more vulnerable to experiencing intense mood, anxiety, and other psychological symptoms during times of (physiological) hormonal fluctuations, such as menarche, premenstrual period, ovulation and perimenopause.

In addition, converging evidence from multiple studies shows that these episodes can lead to severe emotional distress, disability, and a higher risk of self-harm. Despite that, the concept of hormonal sensitivity is not well disseminated in the educational curricula, which contributes to poor health care outcomes.

After attending this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Review and discuss the biological studies on hormonal sensitivity and reproductive mental health.

  • Review and discuss the clinical studies on hormonal sensitivity and reproductive mental health.

  • Review and discuss the literature of premenstrual worsening as a comorbid condition versus an exacerbation of other disorders.

  • Review the link between the menstrual cycle and suicide risk and behavior.

  • Discuss the educational and health service gaps in this area.

WE ARE INTERNATIONAL - This webinar will start at 1:30PM EST Find your timezone here.

Speaker: Benicio N. Frey, MD, PhD, FRCPC (he/him)

Dr. Frey is a Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioural Neurosciences at McMaster University; Medical Director of the Women’s Health Concerns Clinic at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton; Academic Head of the Mood Disorders Program, McMaster University; and Director of the Centre for Clinical Neurosciences at St Joes/McMaster University.

His research is primarily focused on understanding the neurobiology of mood disorders, with a focus on female-reproductive life events. Some of his current research involves clinical trials in the areas of premenstrual dysphoric disorder, perinatal anxiety, and perinatal emotional dysregulation, as well as studies of sleep and biological/circadian rhythms disruption across pregnancy and the postpartum period. He has more than 300 publications accepted in peer-reviewed journals and has received numerous career awards, including the title of University Scholar in 2020.

PMD Remembrance Day 2023 - Light A Candle With Us

Each year on April 27, we take a solemn day to reflect and honor those who have lost their lives to PMDD or PME.

Even through the excitement of raising awareness and sparking change, we hold close those who are no longer with us. Because they are the reason we fight! Any life lost to premenstrual disorders is too many.

We ask that you join us in lighting a candle of remembrance at 8pm (in your time zone) and take a few minutes of quiet reflection (or whatever you feel is right for you to do).

If you would like to share a tribute in memory of those we've lost, share a picture or video of your candle and use #PMDRemembranceDay so we can see the lights shining around the world.

PMD Awareness Month Landmark Light Ups

On April 15th, 2023, landmarks around the world will light up teal in honor of PMD Awareness Month!

With this year’s theme of Spark Change, we believe lighting up landmarks around the world will be a powerful symbol of hope and community to help spark awareness and change! If you are going to a light-up, make sure you take lots of pictures and tag us in @iapmdglobal!

Confirmed so far :

  • Bank of America Plaza, Dallas, TX, USA

  • Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Bridge, VA, USA

  • Mid-Hudson Bridge, NY, USA

  • Brant Street Pier, Burlington, ON, Canada

  • Big Banana, NSW, Australia

  • Hamilton Signature Sign, ON, Canada

  • Bridgend County Borough Council, Wales, UK

  • Rochester Cathedral, Kent, UK

  • Gloucester Cathedral, UK

  • Exeter Historic Guildhall, Exeter

  • The Bell Tower, Perth, Australia

  • City Hall of Prince Edward Island, Canada

  • Vancouver Convention Centre, Canada

Ideas to help you raise awareness at light-ups:

  • Get a group of folks together and go and hand out some posters to anyone passing by

  • Contact a local news station and see if they will cover the light-up and share your story

  • Share on any local Facebook groups etc why the building/location is lit up teal that day and how people might know they have a PMD. If you find someone who thinks they may have PMDD, we recommend this page for them.

  • Yes! If it is safe to do so, you are very welcome to attend a light-up. They can be very powerful to see in person.

Please note that if you are arranging a larger group to attend, some locations require you to have prior approval or permits, so do be mindful and research in advance and make sure you contact the location directly if you have any queries.

  • All locations have their own timing/procedure for light-ups - most locations will light up around dusk. If you are traveling any distance to attend, then do contact the venue in advance for their specific timings.

The exception to this is Niagara Falls which lights at 10 pm EST for 15 minutes.

With thanks to Gina Friel who volunteered her time to organize the light ups.

PMD Awareness Instagram Challenge 2023

PMD Awareness Instagram Challenge 2023

Join an army of #PMDPeeps in the ever-popular photo-a-day #PMDAwarenessChallenge on Instagram.

Each day in April we will share a hint word to inspire posts about your PMD experience. Then, you post your representation in an image or reel of that word in response. There will be winners chosen at the end of the month and maybe a few surprises along the way! This activity is always popular and wonderful for community-building, as well as getting PMD awareness ‘out of the echo chamber’ and to the general public.

You can respond literally, figuratively - or think outside the box! Photos, doodles, illustrations, etc. all are welcome! We love seeing what you come up with!

This is one of our favorite times of year - seeing the PMD community bonding, sharing, and learning. And each year, more and more voices join the conversation - with lots of lightbulb moments and connections made between hormones and mental health.

By sharing your experience you never know who you could be helping. Your posts might create a ‘lightbulb moment’ for someone struggling in the dark!

How does it work?

  1. Every day in April, @IAPMDglobal Instagram will share a hint word and short prompt.

For example: ‘Hope’ - what has given you hope in your PMD journey?

  2. You share a post about PMD on your account, inspired by the hint. Include the hashtags #PMDAwarenessChallenge and #PMDAwarenessMonth2023. That’s it!

Here are the hint words for 2023 for those who want to get their thinking hats on!

Do I have to join in every day?

No - although we hope you do! You can post and get involved when you can. Priority for the prize allocation goes to those who got creative with their posts and made a committed effort to get involved regularly. The winners will be chosen in May 2022 by the IAPMD social media team.

How can I support others?

Get involved in building the PMD community by searching for #PMDAwarenessChallenge and #PMDAwarenessMonth2023 on Instagram hashtags to check in with others who are taking part and show them some love! Chat, make friends, support each other - we love to see it!

See someone who needs signposting to information? Send them to the link in our Instagram bio (iapmd.org/links) for quick links to all our popular resources!

Need some inspiration?

Check out last year's entries by searching for #PMDAwarenessChallenge and #PMDDAwarenessMonth2022 on Instagram. Want to go even further back? Check out #PMDDAwarenessChallenge from previous years

World Bipolar Day: PMDD v Bipolar

If you have ever been confused about the similarities and differences between PMDD & Bipolar Disorder, you won’t want to miss this.

On World Bipolar Day 2023, Join Professor Arianna Di Florio (National Centre of Mental Health, Wales) for this educational webinar to learn more about these conditions which are so often easily confused and misdiagnosed:

  • Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD)

  • Bipolar Disorder

  • Premenstrual Exacerbation (PME) of Bipolar Disorder

As so many of us have experienced, misdiagnosis is common - accurate diagnosis is key to support, understanding, and the correct treatment.

The session is intended for a generalist audience without a psychiatry background and will be organized into three parts.

We will also be finding out about the large ‘Preddict’ PMDD genetic study running at NCMH currently, where they are trying to understand how an individual’s genes and environment can help identify individuals at risk of psychiatric disorders associated with reproductive events, such as the menstrual cycle.

NCMH: "The National Centre for Mental Health (NCMH) brings together world-leading researchers from Cardiff, Swansea and Bangor Universities to learn more about the triggers and causes of mental ill-health. We aim to help improve diagnosis, treatment and support for the millions of people affected by mental ill-health every year, as well as reduce the stigma faced by many."

All proceeds from this webinar go to IAPMD - a non-profit providing support, education, and resources to anyone affected by Premenstrual Disorders.

WE ARE INTERNATIONAL - This event will run at 11 am EST / 4 pm UK - Find your timezone here

Presenter: Arianna Di Florio, M.D., Ph.D.

Professor Arianna Di Florio is a member of the IAPMD Clinical Advisory Board and runs the UK’s only clinic for *differential diagnosis for PMDD and Bipolar Disorder. She is based in Cardiff, Wales.

Professor of Psychiatry, Cardiff University, Honorary Consultant Psychiatrist, Cardiff and Vale University Health Board, Adjunct Assistant Professor, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Director of the Reproductive Mental Health Programme at Cardiff University.

*Differential Diagnosis - In medicine, a differential diagnosis is the distinguishing of a particular disease or condition from others that present similar clinical features (or symptoms).

Tickets are by donation - A minimum of $1 donation is required by Eventbrite. Please give what you can. Every $, £, €, and ¥ goes to support the mission of IAPMD.

If you are in financial difficulties due to living with a Premenstrual Disorder - please contact Vanessa at events@iapmd.org for a no-questions-asked complimentary ticket a minimum of 4 days before the event to guarantee your spot.
