Provider Directory

The IAPMD’s Provider Directory is the first-ever international directory created specifically to help you find healthcare providers who understand and support those living with Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) and Premenstrual Exacerbation (PME).

We know finding the right provider can be difficult. PMDD was only internationally recognized in 2019, and PME remains a clinical and research diagnosis. Many providers still haven’t received training in these conditions.

But you're not alone, and help is out there. This directory was built to make your search faster and easier by connecting you with informed, compassionate professionals. It’s a growing resource and will continue to expand as more trusted providers are added.

What kind of doctor should you see for PMDD or PME?

Several types of healthcare providers can support you with evidence-based treatments for Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) or Premenstrual Exacerbation (PME), including:

→ General Practitioners (GPs)/Primary Care Providers (PCPs)

→ Gynecologists

→ Endocrinologists

→ Psychiatrists

Gynecology and psychiatry are the medical specialties most likely to know and understand PMDD and PME.

Ideally, you’ll work with a provider with experience and training in treating premenstrual disorders. However, these specialists can be hard to find. What’s most important is finding a provider who is open, compassionate, and willing to learn about these conditions in order to support you effectively.

The type of provider that’s right for you may depend on several factors, including:

→ The severity of your symptoms

→ Treatments you’ve already tried

→ Your stage in the diagnosis or treatment process

→ Your personal preferences and goals

→ Provider availability in your healthcare system

For first-line treatments, such as SSRIs or certain birth control pills, you don’t need to see a specialist in PMDs. These options are commonly prescribed by GPs, PCPs, and gynecologists.

If you’re seeking talking therapies such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) or Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), it’s important to work with a qualified mental health professional trained in those approaches.

For more advanced treatment options, like chemical menopause (GnRH analogs) or surgical interventions (such as hysterectomy with oophorectomy), a gynecologist, endocrinologist, or psychiatrist with knowledge in reproductive mental health may be appropriate.

In some countries, there are also PMS and menopause specialists who frequently treat PMDD.

Since PME is closely related to PMDD, providers experienced with PMDD are often knowledgeable about PME as well. Asking whether they’ve worked with patients diagnosed with PMDD is often a helpful starting point.

To support your conversation, you can print and share a copy of the PMD Treatment Guidelines with your provider.

Things to Keep in Mind When Seeking Treatment for PMDs

Finding the right provider for Premenstrual Disorders (PMDs) and gynecological concerns can be challenging. If you're unsure whether you're experiencing PMDD or PME, consulting with a psychologist or psychiatrist familiar with PMDs can be especially helpful. They can assist in making a differential diagnosis—identifying the correct condition among those with overlapping symptoms.

If you are also experiencing gynecological symptoms, a gynecologist may be a better choice to ensure you're receiving appropriate care for any co-existing conditions.

Ideally, the treatment of PMDs involves a collaborative care approach—one that not only provides medical treatment but also equips individuals with the tools to understand, manage, and cope with their symptoms and their wider impact. Unfortunately, this level of integrated care is not always available, and many patients find themselves bouncing between providers or services, which can be deeply frustrating.
