Creating a Cycle Science Community - IAPMD Clinical Science Community

The first of our Professional Community Sessions

Although the effects of the menstrual cycle on emotion, thinking, and behavior have fascinated scientists for years, pervasive methodological problems have limited the ability of this research to improve menstrual and mental health. A related problem is that a relatively small number of laboratories are focused primarily on the relationship between the menstrual cycle and mental health, leading to a void in training, mentorship, and networking opportunities for scientists interested in these topics.

In this webinar, we will cover:

  • The reasons that we need a cycle science community

  • A brief review about what is and is not yet known about cycle effects on behavior and premenstrual disorders

  • A vision for how a cycle science community can lead to improved outcomes for people with cyclical disorders

  • Review of the structure of the cycle science webinars and networking

  • Requesting ideas from participants about the kinds of talks they would like to see or would be willing to give

The International Association for Premenstrual Disorders Clinical Advisory Board, staffed primarily by scientific experts who volunteer their time, has created this Cycle Science Community with the goal of accelerating the accumulation of rigorous, impactful cycle science by fostering opportunities for training, mentorship, and networking across disciplines. The community will feature a monthly webinar in Cycle Science, provided by an expert volunteer speaker. These webinars will be aimed at reviewing and optimizing methodological approaches, creating a shared awareness of the most rigorous existing studies, and promoting the careers and visibility of current scientists in this area.

The webinars, which will be held on zoom each month, will be followed by a 30-minute virtual networking session on kumospace.

Live webinar attendance is free to all scientists and scientists-in-training; however, we encourage those who are able to make a small suggested donation of US$15 to IAPMD. These funds will help to sustain IAPMD, a small but powerful nonprofit organization that will provide the social media visibility and staff support to sustain this new cycle science community.
