Analytic Strategies For Research On The Menstrual Cycle - IAPMD Cycle Science Webinar

This session will focus on analytic strategies used to study menstrual cycle-related changes in a variety of outcomes measures. Specifically, the talk will focus on quartic polynomial regressions and cosine regressions. Examples will be presented, and limitations will be discussed in relation to diverse timing of symptom change during the menstrual cycle. Additionally, results using an innovative analytic approach will be presented in which symptom change in sexual desire is partitioned according to variance attributable to random intercepts (mean level differences across individual women), fixed effects of the menstrual cycle (average cyclical change attributable to the menstrual cycle), random effects of the menstrual cycle (individual differences in effects of the menstrual cycle), the day-to-day covariations of sexual desire and a variety of physical and psychological symptoms independent of the menstrual cycle, and cyclical changes in those same physical and psychological symptoms as contributors of cyclical changes in sexual desire.

Speaker: Jeff Kiesner, Professor (Associate) - Department of Social and Developmental Psychology - Padova, Italy

The International Association for Premenstrual Disorders Clinical Advisory Board, staffed primarily by scientific experts who volunteer their time, has created this Cycle Science Community with the goal of accelerating the accumulation of rigorous, impactful cycle science by fostering opportunities for training, mentorship, and networking across disciplines. The community will feature a monthly webinar in Cycle Science, provided by an expert speaker. These webinars will be aimed at reviewing and optimizing methodological approaches, creating a shared awareness of the most rigorous existing studies, and promoting the careers and visibility of current scientists in this area.
