Sleep and the Menstrual Cycle

This is an IAPMD Professional Community Webinar, and the content is aimed at Health Care Professionals & Researchers. This webinar will specifically benefit all health professionals, people with lived experience, educators, trainees, etc.

Please join IAPMD, Dr. Fiona Baker, and Dr. Marie Gombert as they discuss sleep and the menstrual cycle.

After attending this webinar attendees will have a better understanding of

  • Sleep: function and mechanisms, strategies to study sleep, and physiological changes associated with sleep.

  • Effects of the menstrual cycle on sleep and vice versa.

  • Sleep and menstrual-associated disorders.

  • Perspectives of the field of sleep and the menstrual cycle.

  • How sleep spindles increase during the luteal phase and how sleep deprivation and circadian disruption affect the menstrual cycle physiology.

  • How good sleep has a buffering effect on daily mood changes across the menstrual cycle.

This webinar will specifically benefit researchers in biology-related fields and clinical research, trainees, and healthcare providers (e.g., gynecologists, nurses, other healthcare professionals). This work aims to raise awareness on the importance of sleep in individuals with menstrual cycles, as an element to consider in studies as well as in clinical practice.

Speakers: Fiona Baker, Ph.D. and Marie Gombert, Ph.D.

Fiona Baker, Ph.D. is the Director of the Center for Health Sciences and the Human Sleep Research Program at SRI International. She focuses on understanding the interplay between sleep physiology and human health across the lifespan. Baker is a world expert on issues of sleep in women. Her areas of research include sleep EEG, sex differences in sleep, sleep in menopause, relationships between sleep and cardiovascular functioning, and interactions between brain development, sleep, and behaviors such as alcohol use, across adolescence.

Marie Gombert, Ph.D. is a postdoctoral fellow working on several NIH-funded projects to better understand the importance of biological rhythms and sleep in human health. Her interests are particularly the menstrual variations in physiology, and also in how the socioeconomic context of individuals shapes their life habits and health.
